But you must reduce your expenses by the amount of any uniform allowance or reimbursement you receive. Moving every few years gets expensive for active-duty members.

Filing Separate Returns
If you were serving in a combat zone or outside the U.S., you are eligible for an extension. Please note that any tax extension is not an extension of time to pay any tax owed by the regular due date of the return. Therefore, interest and/or penalties might be charged on any taxes owed from April 15, 2021 to the date the taxes are paid. If you miss the April 15 deadline, you have until October 15, 2021 to e-file your return. When you’re defending our country, your tax return is probably the last thing on your mind. You can’t put off filing taxes forever, but you and your spouse may qualify for a deadline extension of at least 180 days after you’ve returned from a combat zone. If you serve in a combat zone as an enlisted service member or as a warrant officer for any part of a month, all your income for that month is exempt from federal taxes.

Powered by an industry-leading tax service provider, it’s designed to address situations specific to the military. The number-one issue I’ve seen is inconsistency in tax preparation that results from different people preparing a member’s return year after year. (Military members are constantly moving from place to place.) In one year, the member is in a foreign country, so someone back home prepares it. Another year, the member has his mother-in-law prepare the return. The following year, the member prepares it himself. There’s no consistency, which often leads to problems.
However, if your duties keep you away from home, your spouse can use a power of attorney to file a joint return on your behalf. Tax-free pay can provide a great opportunity to save extra money or reduce debt. In fact, IRS rules allow tax-free combat pay to be used for contributions to an IRA. Since your IRA can grow tax-deferred until you withdraw the money, contributing more today can provide a real savings boost over the years.

Among its goals are opening up vocational opportunities for veterans and assisting veterans in restoring physical and psychological functions. Veterans may receive payments through the program — such as through its Transitional Work Program — and any payments or earnings are nontaxable. Moving from one duty station to another does not by itself constitute a change of legal residence. Filing the correct military papers to change your state of residency by itself does not constitute legally changing your state of residency. H&R Block does not provide audit, attest or public accounting services and therefore is not registered with the board of accountancy of the State in which the tax professional prepares returns. If you’re in the military, you’re probably taxed in your state of legal residence rather than in the state where you’re stationed.
